Mugs and Teacups Quilt Tutorial

Hey all! I promised the measurements for my Mugs and Teacups quilt and here they are.

The following cutting and piecing directions are to make the following quilt top. You will be making 7 teacup blocks and 9 mug blocks.

Mugs and Teacups Quilt

Finished Quilt Size: 42 1/2″ x 42 1/2″

Please read all directions before you begin.
Measurements include ¼” seam allowance.
Sew with right sides together.
Cutting directions are based on 43″ WOF.
WOF = Width of Fabric

Fabric Requirements:

Background Fabric: 1/2 yd (Technically you only need 13 1/2″ [3/8 yd], but if you are afraid of making mistakes allow for 1/2 yd.)
7 Assorted Fabrics for teacups: 1 Fat Eighth of each OR fabric scrap that measures at least 6″ x 6 1/2″ of each fabric
9 Assorted Fabric for mugs: 1 Fat Eighth of each OR fabric scrap that measures at least 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ of each fabric
Sashing Fabric: 1/2 yd
Stripe Border: 1/2 yd
Outer Border: 3/4 yd (Again, technically you only need 22 1/2″ [5/8 yd], but if you are afraid of making mistakes allow for 3/4 yd.)

*If you are using the same fabric for background, sashing, and outer border like I did, you’ll need a total of 1 1/2 yd.

Cutting Directions:

From Background Fabric:

Cut 3 strips 1″ x WOF, subcut into 16 – 1″ x 6″ pieces
Cut 1 strip 1 1/2″ x WOF, subcut into 7 – 1 1/2″ x 1 3/4″ pieces
Cut 1 strip 1 1/2″ x WOF, subcut into 9 – 1 1/2″ x 2 1/4″ pieces
Cut 2 strips 2″ x WOF, subcut into 7 – 2″ x 6 1/2″ pieces
Cut 2 strips 1 3/4″ x WOF, subcut into 32 – 1 3/4″ x 1 3/4″ pieces

From each of your assorted 7 fabrics for your Teacups:

Cut 1 – 5 1/2″ x 5″ pieces
Cut 1 – 1″ x 6″ pieces

From each of your assorted 9 fabrics for your Mugs:

Cut 1 – 5 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ pieces
Cut 1 – 1″ x 6″ pieces

Sashing (White):

Cut 2 strips 2″ x WOF, subcut into 12 – 2″ x 6 1/2″ pieces
Cut 5 strips 2″ x WOF, subcut into 5 – 2″ x 29″ pieces
Cut 2 strips 2″ x WOF, subcut into 2 – 1 3/4″ x 32″ pieces

Stripe Border:

Cut 4 strips, 2 1/2″ x WOF, subcut into 2 – 2 1/2″ x 32″ strips
and 2 – 2 1/2″ x 36″ strips

Outer (White) Border:

Cut 4 strips, 3 3/4″ x WOF, subcut into 2 – 3 3/4″ x 36″ strips
and 2 – 3 3/4″ x 42 1/2″ strips

Piecing Directions:

Step 1: Draw a diagonal line on the backside of all your 1 3/4″ x 1 3/4″ background squares. Place them on the two bottom corners of your mug and teacup pieces. (Make sure you’re laying out your mug and teacup pieces with the 5 1/2″ as the width laying horizontally.) Sew directly on drawn line as shown in picture below.

Step 2: Cut 1/4″ from seam and press toward background piece.
Next, take your 1″ x 6″ background strips and sew them to each of your 1″ x 6″ mug and teacup strips. *Note: It is important to make sure to use a scant 1/4″ when sewing this pieces.

Press toward your mug and teacup strips. You should have the following pieces.

Step 3: Take your strips sewn in Step 2 and cut them into the following pieces.

Teacup strips: 3 – 1 1/2″ pieces.
Mug strips: 1 – 2 1/2″ piece, 2 – 1 1/2″ piece

Step 4: Sew your pieces cut in Step 3 to look like the following image. Press away from center piece.

Step 5: Take your 7 – 1 1/2″ x 1 3/4″ background pieces and sew them to the bottoms of all your teacup handle pieces made in Step 4. Then take your 9 – 1 1/2″ x 2 1/4″ background pieces and sew them to the bottoms of all your mug handles made in Step 4. Press toward background piece.

Step 6: Now take all your mug and teacup blocks made in Step 1 and sew them to their coordinating handles made in Step 5. Press toward large mug and teacup piece.

Your blocks should look like these:

Step 7: You’re not quite done yet though! To make your teacup blocks the same size block as your mugs, take your remaining 7 – 2″ x 6 1/2″ background pieces and sew them to the tops of your teacup block made in Step 6. Press toward top background piece.

Your finished blocks should look like this.

To finish your quilt top, lay out your blocks in a 4 x 4 grid. Take your 12 – 2″ x 6 1/2″ and sew them to the right sides of the blocks in the first three columns of your grid. Then sew all the blocks together in rows. Next, take 3 of your 5 – 2″ x 29″ pieces and sew them in between every row. Press the whole quilt top.

Finishing your quilt:

Take your remaining 2 – 2″ x 29″ sashing pieces and sew to either of the sides of your quilt center. Then take your 2 – 1 3/4″ x 32″ sashing pieces and sew them to the top and bottom of your quilt center. Press these inner borders away from center.

Stripe Border:
Sew the 2 – 2 1/2″ x 32″ strips to sides of the quilt top. Press away from center. Sew the remaining 2 – 2 1/2″ x 36″ strips to the top and bottom of the quilt top. Press away from center.

Outer Border:
Sew the 2 – 3 3/4″ x 36″ strips to sides of the quilt top. Press away from center. Sew the remaining 2 – 3 3/4″ x 42 1/2″ strips to the top and bottom of the quilt top. Press away from center.

And there you have it! The measurements for my Mugs and Teacups Quilt. Hope you all enjoy!
