Spooky Owl Appliqué Throw Pillow

My countdown to Halloween continues here at SarahRose Quilts!!

The second of three Halloween projects on this countdown to Halloween is my Spooky Owl Appliqué Throw Pillow.

Isn’t it just adorbs!?

The finished throw pillow measures 14.5″ x 14.5″ and features a machine appliquéd owl over a bright harvest moon. The appliquéd owl pattern is my own and comes from my quilt pattern “Whooo’s There?”.

Note: I’ve created a PDF pattern of just the owl appliques as people have shown interest in a downloadable print of the applique pattern. The download is 3 dollars for two different owl applique patterns and can be purchased at my Etsy shop here.

In the original quilt I used really whimsical pastel greens, turquoises, and purples. So I thought it would be fun to have a more natural looking owl for Halloween. So I went with more harvest inspired colors like burnt orange and shades of golden brown.

I traced a large circle for the bright yellow moon background and appliqued it on a dark blue night sky. For a little extra character, I added borders and then appliquéd a scalloped frame to really make him stand out.

To finish the pillow, I used the envelope back pillow technique and bound the pillow’s raw edge with binding. The large orange polka dots on the back of this pillow are so cute too! I love large scale polka dots. :)

The envelope back pillow technique is great for this project too as I can use an existing 14″ x 14″ throw pillow and switch it out with something else when the fall season is over. :) That means I can make something fun for winter too!!

Check out last week’s project, the first of three projects on my countdown to Halloween — my Halloween Mantel Scarf.

And don’t forget! Next week is my final project on the countdown. Be here when I reveal my small haunted wallhanging. You won’t want to miss it! :)

Happy Sewing!
